Since the Capitol Hill raid on January 6th of last year, this is the first election. It serves as a reminder to the world and America of the vulnerability of our robust democracy.

The president's party is probably going to lose control of the House once more. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump all experienced it.

The optimistic viewpoint is that this splits the government, clipping the wings of a president. But it also stalls governance, and in today's corrosive and tribal environment, it might spark a frenzy of inquiries and impeachments.

More than 40 million Americans have already voted early, and millions more are planning to do so.
