OIL SPILL ON RAYONG BEACHES
- Good news, as Koh Samet beaches have survived the huge oil slick nearby without any damage to sand or coral according to reports from the island where room cancellations have mounted following the mega leak from a pipeline between Samet and the mainland. According to the Natural Resources and Environment Minister, there are no signs of oil damage anywhere on the island. Unlike the Mae Ramphueng beaches on the mainland where cleanup operations continue. We are also told that the oil slick which quickly spread over dozens of square kilometers has now virtually disappeared, from the waterline at least, after constant treatment with chemicals. Beaches along the rayong coastline in that area remain closed however and swimming is not allowed, with local merchants importing fish from other regions and not buying from nearby suppliers.
