Ukrainians living in places that had not yet come under attack from Russian forces may have hoped that they would remain safe.

But those hopes were destroyed, together with large parts of Ukraine's fourth biggest city Dnipro, a hub for aid and for refugees from further afield.

Three Russian airstrikes hit the eastern industrial city on Friday, killing at least one person, according to Interior Ministry adviser Anton Heraschenko.
