Brazil election: Bolsonaro calls on protesters to end blockades on nation's roads

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro called on protesters on Wednesday to put an end to blockades they had set up on roads across the nation in the days since the presidential runoff election.

"I'm just as upset, as sad as you. But we have to keep our head in place," he said, calling demonstrations welcome as part of democracy but the blockades on the nation's highways are making ongoing demonstrations illegitimate. He called on his supporters to choose other ways to demonstrate.

Authorities said they were making headway in their efforts to clear blockades, but there are still concerns the demonstrations were disrupting fuel distribution, industrial activity and food deliveries. Bolsonaro has not conceded his loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, though he said he would follow the constitution, indicating a transition was likely to take place.
