US Defense Secretary Meets Thai Prime Minister in Bangkok

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin met with Thailand's Prime Minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha, in Bangkok on June 13, 2022.

MORE: Austin was greeted by Prayuth at Thailand's Ministry of Defense, where he inspected the guard of honor during a welcome ceremony. They then sat down for a bilateral meeting.

Speaking to reporters later, Austin said his recent meeting with China’s defense minister Wei Fenghe in Singapore was an important step in efforts to open lines of communication between the two militaries.

After his Thailand visit, Austin will depart for Brussels, where he will attend the NATO Defense Ministerial, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Defense.
