Schecter 8-Studio: Standard Tuning (e,E - a, A - d,D - g,G)
-Light gauge bass strings with medium gauge guitar strings.
Playing around with the #chord structures on my new #8string #bass . Due to the #octave #voicing, it is a whole new world with what has an appealing sound as opposed to the 4 string. This is just a simple and early attempt at a #chrodal #melody between D and A in A major. Open D string and then the 11th fret on the G string make for a nice open chord. The chords sounds close enough in voicing since the upper open D and the lower F# are only a major 3rd away. Same pattern of open(A strings) and 11th(on D strings) will produce an A major chord with the same voicing and full sounding effect. Motion in between chord changes is between the 1st and 3rd note of each respective chord(7th,9th,1th frets). Walking embellishments seemed to fit nicely. Landing on the 7th fret and also using the lower pair of open strings plays a total of 4 of the same note at once with the middle two being the same pitch and octave. Hand technique is critical for intonation on all notes on this thing but I found the most luck playing the clearances in between tempered tuning. Slightly sharper on the guitar strings.
I see why I've never heard of this bass (or any like it) until this year. For many reasons I decided to put the bass down over 10 years ago. Watched a video just a few months ago and... Guitar Center had one available in the world. This bass is the first electric bass that I believe could be finally capable of creating the sounds I have always wanted. Previous owner probably did not feel the same. Bass arrived with the guitar strings only a 5th higher than the bass strings and was absolutely plagued with not enough tension. I only had the option to buy used and that didn't seem to matter. Other than two dead 9v batteries and missing the factory plastic wrap there was very little evidence that the bass was used extensively or even much at all. I had, what I image to be, the same frustration with intonation and functionality at first. After playing and exploring the bass for a few hours, Im starting to believe it could be an animal all its own. All "two note" chords played on the G set and D set together as a chord create a nice 4 note chord with only roots and 3rds. Almost feel like a bassist that needs another bass player as opposed to a guitarist for performing duets. Much more exploring to come. Hope you enjoyed it!
