The Merkava’s initial design was considered an overall success; however, it still received updates to improve vehicle performance. The Merkava Mk. 2b entered service in 1983 and was fitted with spaced armor, a Matador Mk. 2 fire control system (FCS), and an updated transmission, among other improvements.
