Incorporating Fall Color into the Native Plant Garden

Many gardeners want "colorful gardens" but forget the value of fall color. When we discuss a symphony of blooms- we also should be thinking about color- how will those trees and shrubs appear in the fall season?

The northeast is mostly deciduous forest which means that most trees, shrubs, and perennials drop their leaves. It's important to consider how that plant will look in the fall. Does it have great leaf color? How about the stems? Does it have an interesting bark or berry?
