6.7-magnitude quake rocks South Nias in North Sumatra

A strong quake struck off the west coast of Sumatra island early on Monday, March 14, 2022, sending residents fleeing from their homes.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the shallow 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit at 4:09 a.m. at a depth of 25 kilometers, with its epicenter 6 kilometers from Southern Hibala, South Nias, a regency in Nias Islands, North Sumatra. The earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the earthquake was felt at moderate intensity in nearby provinces for one minute. There have been no reports of damage or victims, due to communications problems.
