Summary:
About 20,000 years in future, humans have spread
across the universe. Planets are ruled by feudal
houses held in check by laws under the watch of the
Padishah Emperor.
Of all the planets in the known universe, only Arrakis
contains the precious “spice” melange, a drug capable
of extending life and enhancing consciousness. Spice
allows faster than light travel by navigators to fold
space. Without spice, planets would be cut off from
each other. Without spice institutions like the Ben
Jeserits and Mentants would fail. Without it society
would collapse.
Because of its harsh conditions, Arrakis is almost
unlivable. Giant sandworms roam the dunes and wild
Freeman hide in rock shadows.
Governing Arrakis and harvesting spice brings great
riches, and greater treachery. Only the emperor could
grant Arrakis as a fiefdom, and he handed it to the
noble family House Atreides. Did the emperor mean
this as a gift or a curse?
Our story opens with Paul Atreides and his parents as
they move from the water-rich world of Caladan to
the desert world of Arrakis also known as Dune.
