Performance Notes:
Composed in 1911, Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F for Military Band” is a standard in the wind band repertoire. The piece is constituted of seven folk songs which are most skillfully arranged. Three appear in the first movement, one each in the second and third, and two in the finale.
Movement I: "Glorishears," "Swansea Town," and "Claudy Banks"
Movement II: "I'll Love My Love"
Movement III: "A Blacksmith Courted Me"
Movement IV: "Dargason," and "Greensleeves"
Should E-flat or C cornet/trumpet be substitute for the Cornet 1 in B-flat part, two passages are cued in other parts to cover for notes which are very low and/or out of range. The first is in Movement I, measures 127 thru 131 (cued in the Cornet 2 part). The second is in Movement IV, measures 207 thru 208. In the case of the second exception, the players may decide at which point the hand-off from the substituting euphonium part may best occur, or just enter on the downbeat of measure 209.
In the unlikely instance that a flugelhorn is substituted for horn, the passage in measures 105 to 112 of Movement IV has pitches altered up one octave. Additionally, if a baritone or euphonium is substituted for horn, the passage in Movement IV from measure 185 to 192 may prove to be uncomfortably high. This is cued in the flugelhorn 2 part.
In Movement IV, some notes are marked with parentheses around them. These indicate the note may be omitted for an optional breath, an allowance made primarily to account for multiple consecutive long phrases which have no obvious place to breathe. In the case of the trombone part, the notes with parentheses may be omitted if the intervals become problematic (these notes are also in the tuba part).
For the most part, these parts may be printed two-sided, but in some cases, to minimize uncomfortable turns (particularly involving the D.C. in Movement I), additional pages may be printed or the part in its entirety may be printed one-sided.
