On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz entered Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School and murdered 17 people and wounded 17 others.

On October 20, 2021 Cruz plead guilty to all charges of 1st Degree Murder and Attempted Murder, with the knowledge that that State of Florida was still seeking the death penalty for his actions.

The Penalty Phase of the trial began on July 18, 2022 and has been somewhat rocky to say the least. The jury returned a verdict of life without parole on October 13, 2022.

Cruz's sentencing hearing will run from November 1 to November 2, 2022.
