Body cam video shows Miami Township police shoot man accused of stabbing and killing women
The 58-year-old woman stabbed in Miami Township on Tuesday has died, according to the Hamilton County Coroner's Office.
Joshua Amburgy, the man accused of the stabbing, was shot by Miami Township police, Chief Mike Mills said.
Officers were called to Valencia Drive for a stabbing at around 1 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found Melissa Amburgy, who had been stabbed multiple times.
Mills said Joshua Amburgy fled the scene. A detective and officer found Joshua Amburgy down the road at a residence on Geneva Court. Police said he was holding a butcher knife.
Body cam footage from Miami Township police shows the officers find Joshua Amburgy in the backyard of a residence. There, the two officers repeatedly yell at him to drop the knife.
In the video, Joshua Amburgy holds the knife above his head and runs at the officers. You can see one officer attempt to fire his Taser. Mills said that Taser did not hit Joshua Amburgy. The other officer can be seen firing two rounds from his gun, and one round hits Joshua Amburgy, according to Mills.
From there, the officers can be seen handcuffing Joshua Amburgy and searching his pockets, where they find a second knife.
Mills said the officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived.
Mills said police followed protocol, but said "when he comes at us with a knife, he gives us no choice — zero choice."
Joshua Amburgy went to the hospital in serious condition. Mills said he is known to the police and has previously assaulted officers in other departments in the past. He is charged with attempted murder of a peace officer and felonious assault. More charges will likely be added as a result of Melissa Amburgy's death.
No officers were injured. Melissa Amburgy was airlifted to the hospital, where she later died.
Live Oaks Vocational School and Milford Christian Academy were briefly on lockdown, dispatchers said.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
An officer with Miami Township police shot and killed someone earlier this year. Mills said they received multiple calls on May 20 about a woman firing shots in the parking lot of Berry Lane Apartments. When police arrived, Mills said the woman — 47-year-old Camille Weems — fired one round at officers.
Mills said the three officers at the scene told Weems to drop her gun. When one officer stood up, Mills said the woman fired another round. The officer fired six rounds, hitting her and killing her.
After the May shooting, Mills said he could not remember police ever being involved in a shooting inside Miami Township. This is now the second police shooting in the last seven months.
