Gravely ZTR mower fatal flaw

Mowing about 5 acres is a lot of work. Normally my Gravely tackles the job like a champ. The other day I hit an unexpected patch of mud (no rain and 100+ degree days for a long time - how is there mud?) and the wheels were just spinning and slinging mud up into the engine compartment. I rinsed a lot of it out. Today I started mowing and I got a couple hundred feet mowed when the mower suddenly shut off. It would not crank after that. Set the parking brake, turned off the "blades," checked the battery voltage, but no crank. It's acting like the parking brake isn't set or someone isn't sitting in the seat. But still won't crank even after washing out all the mud and letting it dry.
