How to slow down and get centered:
When you're overwhelmed, it can be really hard to find peace. You're in a flurry of busyness and mental activity. It's like you're stuck on a hamster wheel.
Problem is, we are not taught how to stop, only what to DO. This keeps us stuck!
When you feel the stimulation of overwhelm--just stop, internally.
Use your breath to go into your body. Breathe as deeply as possible to slow down. The more you become embodied, the more you can find peace.
Decide you're already worthy instead of looking for corroboration through achievements.
I tell the story of when I was in college and felt disconnected from myself and scared of silence. I didn't know how to stop and just be with myself.
Ardis Whitman quote: the shaping of a soul. Reach for those luminous places within yourself.
I recite the powerful poem "Sometimes" by David Whyte in this video. What we DO affects who we BECOME! So if we don't like what we're becoming as we go down a certain path, we first need to stop what we are doing.
Listen for the 3 powerful statements at the end of this poem, about beautiful questions that arise in us when we stop and create space for the unknown to surface.
Martha and Mary story from the Bible: Martha didn't know how to stop the frenzied activity as she was "cumbered about much in serving." Mary "chose the better part," because she stopped and focused on what mattered most in the moment.
Personal Growth--Take these action steps:
- Invite a child or trusted person to ask you to take a few deep breaths, every time they sense that you need to get centered.
- When you notice you're in frenzied movement or mental activity, practice stopping.
You can get out of hamster wheel, at any given moment.
