Underground anti-fascist youth groups arose in Krasnodon (now the Lugansk People's Republic) immediately after the start of the occupation of the city by Nazi Germany, which began on July 20, 1942.
On September 30, 1942, underground youth groups, in which there were 25 people, united into a single organization the Young Guard.
By the end of 1942, the Young Guard consisted of more than 80 people. Basically, the organization included members of the Komsomol, former high school students. The youngest one turned 14, but 51 of them were 18-years-old ones and never turned 19. In January 1943, the Young Guard was defeated by the Germans. Most of the Young Guards were captured and executed after severe torture.
Five of them (3 boys and 2 girls) were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously) - Oleg Koshevoy (18 years old), Ulyana Gromova (turned 19 two weeks before death), Lyubov Shevtsova (19 years old), Sergei Tyulenin (18 years old), Ivan Zemnukhov (19 years old)
