Super Mario Advance 2 Playthrough (Game Boy Player Capture) - Yoshi’s Island
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 for the Game Boy Advance. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my GameCube using my Game Boy Player with progressive scan mode enabled (you'll need the GameCube's component cables to do this and your model of GameCube must support component out as well).
Super Mario Advance 2 is mostly just a port of Super Mario World for the SNES. The level design is basically the same, but there’s no longer a two-player mode and Mario and Luigi now have different physics, similar to Super Mario Bros. 2. The audio quality is also noticeably lower than the original SNES version of Super Mario World, and the color palette is much brighter to make up for the original model Game Boy Advance’s lack of a backlight (this game came out in 2002 before the GBA SP).
I think the original SNES version of Super Mario World is indisputably better, but I can see how people would like a portable version of this game, especially back in 2002. I actually prefer Super Mario Bros. 3 over Super Mario World, but it’s still a very good game.
In this version, the game keeps track of the Dragon Coins you collect in each level, so if you want to obtain what is essentially a 100% rating, you’ll need to collect at least five Dragon Coins in each level (in the original SNES version, Dragon Coins merely gave you a 1-up). Also, the game now longer switches to the fall/autumn theme upon completing Special World. Instead, you have to complete all 96 exits to unlock this theme.
I’ll be collecting at least five Dragon Coins per level in this playthrough, and I’ll be completing all 96 exits, so you can treat this playthrough as a walkthrough or guide if you prefer. I’m not completing the entire game in a single session, but I will be completing entire areas this way and picking up my progress from my save points.
In this first part I started a new save file and completed the Yoshi’s Island area.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables at 60 frames per second. I'm using an original model Game Boy Advance as a controller via a GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cable.
