Sonoma, California – On October 15, 2022, Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies shot a Sonoma Valley man armed with a makeshift gun that he used to fire on deputies. The man, identified as 43-year-old Nathan Smart, is expected to survive the shooting. Investigators are trying to determine how he got the gun, which is described as an “improvised firearm” and appears to be made of pipe and black tape. The weapon’s bullet capacity hasn’t been determined, but investigators believe Smart fired at least one round at a deputy during the incident. Another round was still inside the weapon when it was recovered.
