LaGuardia International Airport

Estimated Cost: $8 Billion and out of this cost it has had over 300 Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises that has worked on the project, with contracts valued at more than $910 million.

Location: New York, New York (United States)

Originally Opened: 2 December 1939

The renovation started in the spring of 2016 and is estimated to be fully done 2025.

In April 2010, Christopher Ward publicly announced that the Port Authority had selected consultants to explore a full demolition and rebuilding of LaGuardia Airport. The project would help create a unified, modern, and efficient plan for the airport. Currently it’s an amalgam of decades of additions and modifications, this will finally help to end that. The project, was then expected to cost $2.4 billion it would include the demolition of the existing central terminal building and its four concourses, garage, Hangar 1, and frontage roads.

The plans had stalled for a few years until 27 of July 2015 when Governor Andrew Cuomo, joined by then-Vice President Joe Biden, announced a $4 billion plan to rebuild the terminals as one contiguous building with terminal bridges connecting buildings.

The new airport will be eco-friendly and contain a hotel with around 200 rooms and a conference center. The entire airport will move 180 meters or 600 feet closer to the Grand Central Parkway. The construction of new garages will replace existing parking facilities that are nearby the terminals and Grand Central Parkway. They will create more space for the new facilities. The new terminals at LaGuardia Airport were built close to the Grand Central Parkway which offers more space for taxiing aircraft and reduces ground delays. The runways themselves are not being changed.

The intention of the reconstruction is to get people to forget the misconceptions about Laguardia airport, which has been a negative reputation.

“The old airport, which was probably one of the most hated airports in the country will quickly transform into one of the best” – Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority for NY/NJ

A whole new Laguardia airport means $8 Billion dollars invested into a modern, airy and vibrant travel experience when arriving in New York’s second-largest airport.

The newest terminal B is LEED Silver certified and will be even more ecofriendly and stylish. It will also provide guests with high-quality amenities while they wait to board their flight. It has taken 7 years to start to restore the image of one of the world’s busiest airports and it will come with new facilities, technology and amenities.

We’ll see if this image last when the airport is fully renovated.
