The Middle of Everywhere

The Middle Of Everywhere is Pipher’s story of the changes in her Nebraska town after it became an official refugee resettlement community. Suddenly the streets were filled with people from 52 different countries, including Sudan, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Vietnam. As a therapist and cultural broker, Pipher has interviewed newcomers about their family problems, their view about America, their work and school experiences. She has learned about the faraway cultures of the refugees, but she has also learned about our culture, as it’s seen through the eyes of newcomers. Her work documents the cultural collisions of refugees and Americans. It offers stories about children, teenagers, young adults and mothers as they struggle to learn new languages and new ways. Finally it discusses how people heal from terrible trauma, an increasingly relevant question all in the wake of September 11.
