Gold, skyscrapers, opulent hotels, glamour, and glitz… These are some of the words used to characterize the renowned city-state named Dubai. The city, which began as a modest fishing community in the 18th century, expanded quickly in the early 21st century with a concentration on tourism and luxury. It now has the second-most five-star hotels worldwide and the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which is more than half a mile tall.

This city has become a symbol of luxury, opulence, and immense wealth; and while that is certainly a general perception, it does not tell the whole story. What many people don't know is that behind all of the glitz and glamour, there is a dark side to how this city-state was built.
