Yars Missile System, Tula Submarine, 2 Tu-95MS, Russia holds Exercise Mass Retaliatory Nuc Strike

1. The Yars mobile ground-based missile system of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, the Tula strategic missile submarine of the Northern Fleet, and two Tu-95MS long-range strategic missile carriers were involved in the training of Russia's strategic nuclear forces, Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Gen. of the Army Valery Gerasimov reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

"The training involved the Yars mobile ground missile system of the Strategic Missile Forces, the Tula strategic missile submarine of the Northern Fleet, and two Tu-95MS long-range strategic missile carriers," Gerasimov said.

The launches of the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk spaceport and the Sineva ballistic missile from the Barents Sea at the Kura training ground in Kamchatka were carried out during the training of strategic deterrence forces, according to the Kremlin.

2. Russia has held a strategic nuclear force exercise to practice a massive retaliatory counterstrike against the enemy, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on the Rossiya-24 round-the-clock television news channel on Wednesday.

"In accordance with the Russian Armed Forces’ training schedule an exercise is being held to practice command and control of the Armed Forces, including the tasks of carrying out a massive nuclear strike by the strategic nuclear forces in retaliation for the enemy’s nuclear strike," Shoigu said in a report to President Vladimir Putin.

As part of the training, a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome and a Sineva ballistic missile from the Barents Sea at the Kura test site in Kamchatka. Two Tu-95MS long-range planes were involved in the exercise. Both fired cruise missiles. According to the Kremlin’s website, all tasks were completed in full and all missiles hit their targets, confirming the expected characteristics.

Under the leadership of Russian President Vladimir Putin, ground, sea and air strategic deterrence forces were trained, the Kremlin said, adding that practical launches of ballistic and cruise missiles took place during the drills.

"The tasks envisaged during the training of the strategic deterrence forces were completed in full, all missiles reached their targets, confirming the specified characteristics," the Kremlin said in a statement.
