Trauma Story: Impaled on a Gate!

Doctor Ricky Brown recalls one of the craziest trauma cases he’s ever worked on in his medical career for today’s first episode of the brand new Trauma Stories segment.

Trauma Stories is a new recurring segment where Doctor Ricky Brown will tell us about the most interesting and insane cases he got to work on and experience working at an inner-city hospital in Chicago early on in his medical career.

Today’s patient came in to the emergency room with a gate impaling through his body. Chicago was famous for crime so many houses had pronged gates surrounding their property and apparently this guy was trying to get back into his locked apartment when he fell off the wall he was climbing and landed on the gate.

First thing the medical team did, as with any trauma patient, was to check the ABC’s or the Airways Breathing and Circulation to make sure the patient’s life wasn’t in immediate danger.

Once they confirmed his heart and lungs were doing fine they needed to address the gate which had punctured through his armpit and stopped behind his collar bone narrowly avoiding many life-threatening structures like the subclavian vein and artery.

When they saw no deadly vascular injury and told the patient how lucky he had been he had started laughing and the team moved on to check for any life threatening lung injuries such as pneumothorax or collapse of the lung.

They had to make sure to be very careful around the gate because anytime you’re impaled by a foreign object, taking it out can often unplug the holes it’s made and lead to major bleeding but thankfully the patient seemed to be okay.

Listen to Doctor Ricky break down the anatomy of the arm from the brachial vessels to the subclavian artery to help us understand exactly what the medical team had to deal with to help this patient recover from his injury, and get your mind blown when you discover that the gate somehow missed all those vital structures penetrating not a single vein in the process.

Stick around for the fun fact at the end where you find out why this trauma story can be considered a medical miracle.
