Car split into 2, driver ejected 28 feet after deadly high-speed chase involving SCHP

New details were released on Wednesday giving more insight into a high-speed chase involving a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper and a man driving a stolen car in Berkeley County, which ended in a deadly crash on Monday.

According to an incident report, the driver of the stolen vehicle was attempting to pass a truck on Cooper Store Road when he lost control and struck a tree at a high rate of speed. The car then hit a second tree before splitting into two.

The driver, identified as 39-year-old Damarius Williams of Cordesville by agents with the State Law Enforcement Division, was found lying 28 feet away from the car in a ditch, according to the report. The speedometer was recovered and found to be stuck on 100 miles per hour.

Deputies say Williams was driving more than 110 mph at times during the chase and maneuvering the car in an "aggressive and reckless manner."

No damage was found on the trooper's vehicle who was pursuing Williams, indicating the two vehicles had not collided.

As of Tuesday evening, the trooper remains on active duty, according to SCHP officials. The Department of Public Safety's Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing the incident "to ensure departmental policies and procedures were followed.”

An autopsy is scheduled to determine Williams' cause of death.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing their investigations.
