Small amounts of sugar are acceptable, but eating too much of it can cause or exacerbate many different health problems.
Some of the most unexpected foods, such as marinara sauce, and peanut butter, include added sugar.

Quick, processed foods are a go-to for many individuals. Because of the high sugar concentration in these foods, they consume a disproportionate number of their daily calories from sugar.
The average American consumes the equivalent of 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day; for an adult on a 2,000-calorie diet, 14 percent of their daily intake.

The use of sugar is considered a major factor in the development of obesity and numerous chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

That's why it's recommended to have less than 10% of your daily calories from added sugar, as stated in dietary guidelines.
