My teacher said I could not succeed in college and should focus learning trade. What should I do?

Good question.

First of all you should do what you want to do. All of your life people will tell you what you should do and what you are not able to do or can’t do. At the end of your life, the only thing that matters is if you did what you wanted to do and you also did something that created more benefits for society than you took from society.

If you don’t want to learn a trade, don’t go do that. Instead focus on what you want to do. But to make it clear this does not mean that you should only do what you love.

You should often do things you hate doing since it builds discipline. However, you should not pick a career to build discipline. You should pick a career that you want to work in for many years regardless of what it pays. Over the years working in that career you chose you will have endless opportunities to build discipline doing things you hate.

Now about your teacher and guidance counselor they may or may not mean well. But you need to choose what you want to do. If you want to go to college, then go to college. If you want to be an actor then go be an actor. Just realize that whatever path you choose on that path you will have to endure years of suffering to obtain success.

Also don’t let other people fill your heads with their ideas on what you can or can’t do. You can do anything you want to do if you put enough energy into it and have a relentless focus. Even if you want to play in the NBA and are only 5 foot tall you can do it. You could get rich, buy the team, and put yourself on the team as a player.

So don’t think that doing what you love will make your journey painless. Embrace the pain and long hours and take pride that you set a path and you keep going after your path instead of quitting when it is not fun or enjoyable.

You want to take a reasonable amount of time deciding what you want to do with your life and after you consider it, then make a decision and go in that direction. You should consider becoming an investor since it pays well and offers a lot of upside and advantages.
