Foggy Morning at Gibraltar Airport, Flight Delays, Diversion to Malaga and finally 2 Landings

A think and heavy fog engulfed The Rock of Gibraltar and the Airport this morning. Due to the perfect mixture of temperatures, wind, humidity and air pressure a thick layer of fog took over the runway at Gibraltar.

I watched EZY1963 in a holding pattern over the sea just to east of Gibraltar. While he was holding a private jet came and was holding in a similar position. During the time BA492 showed up followed closely behind by EZY8901, both of these flight took holding positions behind EZY1963.

EZY1963 could hold no longer and finally diverted to Malaga. By the time I got to the airport it was about 10:28 am, and there was ZERO visibility. If you see my other videos you can see the runway, the cityscape, and Gibraltar beautiful and clear, this morning was different. EZY1963 was in a holding pattern for at least 30 minutes if not more before it diverted to Malaga, shortly after followed a private jet.

BA492 and EZY 8901 were in holding patterns for about 20-25 minutes before the fog lifted enough to land safely.

At Gibraltar there is no ILS and there is only one runway. There is no margin for error here as the runway is extremely short at only 1,778/5,833 m/ft. The runway is also surrounded by the sea at both ends and lined by apartments and houses.

When flights can't land here they divert to Malaga. These are several reasons that make Gibraltar a dangerous airport for commercial air traffic.

get closer to the tarmac than any other airport at Gibraltar International Airport, you can walk across it! I don't know of any other major international airport in the world where you can do this! Up close 4K plane spotting at one of the most DANGEROUS and EXTREME airports int he world! Subscribe for more!

I love how these planes land on a tarmac that is surrounded on all sides by water. This is a must watch to see how close to the water these planes land and take off. There are very few airports in the world like this, that could support commercial airline jets to land and take off under such extreme conditions.

Gibraltar is one of the most dangerous airports in the world because the runway is short, it is surrounded by water on both ends of the tarmac, an international highway bisects the tarmac with cars, bikes and people on foot crossing. The weather caused by the Strait of Gibraltar can lead to brutal crosswinds. The pilots who land here have to be very qualified. Flights to Gibraltar are currently only from the United Kingdom because Gibraltar International Airport is technically a military airport not a civilian one.
