Calgary firefighters are seeking $38 million in damages from the city!

In this episode Constitutional Lawyer Leighton Grey and Stephen Whitehead have a conversation about how Stephen came to practice family and constitutional law, what it’s like dealing with pandemic issues in the Canadian Judicial System, and how he’s been working to fight tickets that were issued during the pandemic restrictions.

Stephen has been an associate lawyer primarily practicing in Family, Civil and Constitutional Matters since June 2021. He practices out of an office in Calgary and is also called to the bar of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. He can serve clients all across all three regions.

Stephen completed his undergrad at U of C in French Literature and Law Degree at Thompson Rivers University. In the past, Stephen played and coached football. He coached for eight years before hanging up his whistle (for now).

Since the start of the pandemic, Quebec has issued millions of dollars in tickets for public health violations, but only a fraction of them have actually been paid so far, according to provincial data. From April 1, 2020 to Dec. 31, 2021, authorities have handed out a total of 30,488 tickets to citizens and businesses for not following measures under the Public Health Act.

Whitehead and Grey have a conversation about some of the cases they are working on including an update from Tim Stephens, a previous guest on the Grey Matter Podcast, the progress the legal team has made during the ongoing legal battles that have ensued, and how they hope things turn out as they continue the work they are doing.

More than a dozen firefighters are suing the City of Calgary over its COVID-19 vaccination policy for employees, claiming it violated their rights. Nineteen Calgary firefighters are seeking $38 million in damages from the city, according to a statement of claim filed with the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench on July 7, which amounts to $2 million per firefighter.
