In this episode Constitutional Lawyer Leighton Grey and Steve Hendricks have a conversation about how Steve became interested in the idea of fasting and the science of health, how the science of fasting has evolved dramatically over the last decade, and what the big difference between intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting are.

Steve is a freelance writer living in Boulder, Colorado, and the author of The Oldest Cure in the World: Adventures in the Art and Science of Fasting, which has been published by Abrams Press on September 6, 2022.

In his book "The Oldest Cure in the World: Adventures in the Art and Science of Fasting" Steve writes about the history and science of fasting and his own experiences with the practice.

Mr. Hendricks was born in Arkansas, raised in Texas, and educated at Yale. After college, he spent several years in Seattle and Montana, where he divided his time between writing about politics and doing politics. Steve twice ran for local office in Helena, Montana.

Steve's book on fasting, The Oldest Cure in the World, had its genesis in an article he wrote for Harper’s in 2012. That article took a light stroll through the history and science of fasting and recounted a fast of twenty days that Steve undertook partly out of curiosity but mostly to control his expanding waistline.

The Oldest Cure in the World is about the history and science of fasting as well as the experiences Steve has endured with the practice. This new book was born from a long gestation that has yielded a more complete and livelier chronicle of fasting than has ever been told.

Steve writes that virtually everyone who wants better health can benefit from the science of fasting. The best research on the topic suggests that unless you have an extremely rare disorder that makes it dangerous to go several hours without food, a fast will induce metabolic repairs that will make you healthier and help you live longer.

Hendricks & Grey take a deep dive into the science behind fasting for adults and how it’s been proven that in some cases it can help with chronic illness, how some studies have shown fasting can even reverse some of the damage we do in eating poorly, and what you can do to try fasting for yourself!
