Squirrels Emerge From Their Drey 🌲 10/24/22 15:46

Mom and her Kits venture out of their Drey to find treats on the tree, frolic, and play. Squirrels can have up to 2 litters per year ranging from 2-6 Kits being born. The last liter is usually delivered in August or September with a gestation period of 40 days. Around 12 weeks, most baby Squirrels, called Kits, leave the nest, but some remain with their Mom until the next breeding season. Watching and learning all they need to know for survival. A pair of Squirrels have always lived in the bottom part of the Owl's nest, (a Drey) including in the old adjacent tree that had to be removed.

The Squirrels are not threatened by the Owls, as they have limited pouncing capabilities and the Squirrels move much faster than an Owl can. Hunting from a perch, catching the Squirrel scurrying about, and swooping down on it is usually the way an Owl catches a Squirrel. If a Squirrel would venture on the nest top while the Owl is there, seldom would the Owl be able to move fast enough to catch the Squirrel before it runs away.
