U.K. Conservative Party Leader Rishi Sunak said Monday that the country faces a "profound economic challenge" and needs stability and unity and that he would make it his goal to bring the party and the country together. Sunak is expected to be appointed prime minister Tuesday by King Charles, following his victory in the leadership race after his rivals dropped out.

At 42, Sunak would be the youngest leader of a G20 country and the first person of colour to hold the office of British prime minister.

At least 100 MPs were required to become a candidate and MPs will vote to narrow the field down to two, at which point party members were expected to cast their vote on who will lead the party following the resignation last week of Liz Truss. Sunak took time to thank Truss for her time as leader, saying she led "with dignity and grace through a time of great change and under exceptional difficult circumstances both at home and abroad."
