⭐ RPG Review | Albert Odyssey: Legend Of Eldean | Sega Saturn
Today we're gonna take a look at Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean. Is it any good or is it just d*cks and butts? Let's find out!
Before we get into it, I just wanted to say, I played my copy of Albert Odyssey on the Sega Saturn core, Kronos, in Retroarch. I increased the resolution, mapped the D-pad to the analog stick, I added a filter, increased the gameplay speed, and increase the CPU speed. Please remember that this changes what it was like playing it back in 1996 on the original hardware.
A lot of the cons about the game are fixed through emulation, which we'll discuss later on in the video. And with that out of the way, let's get gaming!
Let's go all the way back to 1990 for a minute. I was five years old and it was Christmas. The Super Nintendo was just released. However, my parents had just bought me my first video game console, a normal Nintendo, which is what the kids who just got the far superior SNES called the first Generation Console.
Needless to say I was lit anyways, five years old with no F's to give, duck hunt gun on my hip, pants full of sh*t, and love in my eyes. A few years later, my parents bought me a Sega Genesis for passing grade four. I was always a console behind it seemed.
My friend across the street had a super Nintendo with the likes of Final Fantasy Six and the Secret of Mana. I had Sonic the Hedgehog. That really made me fall in love with RPGs. RPGs gave me the ability to get lost in strange, in amazing worlds, away from the stress of school, bullies, parents, work, everything.
I was nine years old becoming a hero and saving the world from destruction while meeting strange and fascinating characters, creating bonds, and overcoming loss and hardship all from the comfort of my bedroom. Just me, my old RCA floor model television, the rabbit ears, a last gen gaming console with the RF adapter end cut off so I could connect it to the screws on the back of the tv, and that was all I needed. I was hooked hard.
Over my three and a half decades here on Earth I've played as many RPGs as I could get my hands on, but there were some I never had access to. I had forgotten all about the Sega Saturn until I made it to high school and read a friend's issue of Game Fan Magazine, issue number 40. In it was a preview of an RPG I had never heard of before. Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean. That game has always stuck with me since then, in the back of my memory.
So with my childhood out of the way, join me today, 27 years after the Sega Saturn was released. Finally finishing and reviewing my first Sega Saturn rpg.
If you play this game looking to enjoy some lighthearted story, a solid cast of characters mixed with some funny moments and an absorbing soundtrack, I think you'll find yourself taking a deep breath as the credit's role smiling while thinking of the journey that led you to the end of the game, and a feeling of happiness for taking the journey, letting you escape for at least a little while, the realities of the real world.
To me, that's what RPG's have always been about, and Albert Odyssey, Legends of Eldean has done that wonderfully.
