A Film with John Ioannidis
from Patricia Marchart, Georg Sabransky & Despina Contopoulos-Ioannidis
There are a lot of frightening developments in the world, but I want to take a step back and think positive, think about the good things in our world.
Think about the good things, about what we can achieve, about the younger generations, about our future, about our dreams, about our creativity, about how much we can do, how much we can change our world for the better.
There are threats all over the place. Of course, we have climate change, we have war, we have pandemics, we have disease, we have inequalities, we have hunger, we have poverty, we have all sorts of things to worry about.
But the worst thing would be to just keep threatening people, and putting that ghost of disaster that is coming to us. Because if we do that, disaster will come to us sooner or later. And we will just create it with our own hands.
John Ioannidis
John P.A. Ioannidis, MD, DSc is Professor of Medicine, of Epidemiology and Population Health and by courtesy, of Statistics and of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University where he leads the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS).
His scientific work has been at the forefront of epidemiology, clinical medicine and biomedical research, and he has pioneered the field of meta-research, i.e. the scientific discipline of research on research. Meta-research tries to improve the methods, transparency, reliability, ethics, and research practices of science at large. His work has had wide impact across very diverse biomedical fields and the social sciences. The number of recent citations to his scientific work (6,000 per month) places him among the 6 currently most-cited scientists worldwide. He has been elected a member in the US National Academy of Medicine, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and many other academies and he has received a large number of prizes and honors. He states in his Stanford website: “I consider myself privileged to have learned and to continue to learn from interactions with students and young scientists (of all ages) from all over the world and I love to be constantly reminded that I know next to nothing.” He is also an author of 9 literature books (8 in Greek and 1 in English), three of which have been finalists for the Anagnostis best book the year awards in Greece and he has also written libretti for operas and poetry set to music.
