Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation at Downing Street in London on Thursday, October 20, following a meeting with Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative MPs. “Given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party,” she said.“ I have therefore spoken to his majesty the king, to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.” Truss said she would remain on as prime minister until her successor was chosen. The leadership election would be completed within the next week, Truss said. Truss was appointed prime minister on September 6, following a leadership contest after the resignation of Boris Johnson.
