Why did Lazarus the beggar go to Heaven when there's no indication of his good or bad deeds, or whether he had faith in God or not?”

The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus is found in Luke 16:19–31. The point of the parable is that the Jewish people have the written Law of Moses and the writings of the Prophets. The Jewish people know the Great Shema of loving God and loving one’s neighbor as himself.

In the parable, the rich man ignored the command of God to love his neighbor as himself and thus in return truly didn’t love God. He didn’t even give the scrapes to this man! This poor man who had nothing can only trust God and in the promises of God of a future kingdom for those who believe in him. This poor man didn’t curse God nor curse the rich man. The point is that the rich man can not buy his way into the kingdom of God. It is one’s attitude toward God and the Laws of God. One man lived off the fat of the land while the other man lived by faith in the land.

In one of the discourses of Jesus with the religious leaders, he said this about those who died. “34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” 39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!”

Jesus makes a statement that God is not the God of the dead but of the living for to him all are alive. God is, not was, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Thus from God’s perspective the dead are alive before him. Their bodies are on earth, but the spirit and soul are in what is called Abraham’s bosom which in our age would not be considered “heaven.” It is only after the death and resurrection of Jesus that heaven’s gate was open, if I may used that term, because the true sacrifice of the Lamb of God removed sin before the presence of God, not just covered it.
