Performance Notes:
The poem was written by Lithuanian poet, Pranas Vaicaitis (1876 - 1901), and these words were later made into a song by Lithuanian composer Stasys Simkus (1887 - 1943). It is a melancholic song, Which speaks of the poet's youth, and the shabby home in which hi lived as a child. The words
"bakuze — samanota" mean "mossy hut" in the Lithuanian language. In the second Verse of the Poem he speaks about how his house and everything around it have faded away and disappeared.

Lyrics:
(Original Lithuanian)

Kur bakūžė samanota, Kurioje gimiau,
Obelis kur augalota?
Ką sodne mačiau?
Kur upeliai platūs, sraunūs,
Tekantys smagiai.
Kur tos mintys mano jaunos,
Linksmos kaip drugiai?
Ta bakūžė jau supuvo,
Obelies jau nėr,
Ir upeliai jau išdžiūvo.
Vargas viens tebėr.

(English Translation)
Where is the Mossy Hut?
Where I was born,
The apple tree which grew?
What I saw in the garden?
Where the rivers are flat, flowing, flowing happily.
Where are young thoughts of mine,
Friendly as my friends?
The hut has all but vanished,
The apple tree is no longer there,
And the rivers have all dried up.
Maybe a beggar is possibly still there.
