When did drag become a sexuality?

Almost each day we see a story in the news (often in the USA) about drag queens such as doing a story reading at a school. For some reasons in the last few months doing drag is now part of LGBT or trans.

When did this happen, as up to a few months ago doing drag was nothing more than entertainment (like dancing or a singer or an actor) performed by both men and women, both gay and straight.

In the UK we have pantomime dames, for children, and have done for years. Again performed by gay and straight men. Women too play male parts.

Years ago ALL actors were male and as such all female roles were performed by males.

So when did drag turn into a sexuality that seems now to be part of LGBT? As I did not get that memo.

Some famous men (gay and straight) who performed as females/drag:

Barry Humphries - Dame Edna Everage
Kenny Everett
George Logan and Patrick Fyffe - Hinge and Bracket
Robin Williams
Stanley Baxter
Les Dawson and Roy Barraclough - Cissie Braithwaite and Ada Shufflebotham
Paul O'Grady - Lily Savage
Steve Coogan - Pauline
