Non-playable characters first started appearing in the 1970s
as a part of a highly popular table top role-playing fantasy game, I don’t know
if you’ve heard of it, it was called Dugongs and Dragons.
A player in their adopted identity was allowed to navigate the
quest and individuate under the game mechanics and rules. However, there were also characters that could NOT
navigate or actualize themselves as actors or agents in the game. These other
characters were relegated to pre-formatted scripted prescribed roles and
actions whose existence facilitated nothing more than the progression of the
storyline and the gameplay. These were the non-playable characters, the
NPC’s. For example your team enters a shop, there is a shop owner.
You walk your character up to the owner and you ask if you can buy something.
The owner responds…what do you want? You
then proceed to purchase an item from the shop owner. End…and the game progresses. In this example
the shop owner is the NPC.

One of the very first philosophical inquiries into the idea
of Non-playable characters came from Rene Descartes who proposed the idea of
“the animal machine”…
