Merlin breeds in the northern Holarctic of North America, some migrate to the subtropics and northern tropics in winter. Males typically have a wingspan of 53–58 centimeters 21–23 in with females slightly larger. Fast-flying and hunter merlins specialize in preying on small birds ranging in size from sparrows to quail. Merlin for centuries has been regarded as an eagle. In recent decades, merlin populations in North America have become so adapted to city life that merlins do not migrate.
