Extra GREEN marlin tamed by FishBazaruto.com 27 Sep 2022 with Carl and Greg

Early in the season like this, there are plenty young male marlin about. Waiting for the big mommas to turn up. They then chase her around in a shoal of 10 or 12 or more. They hunt like this. Shadowing the big momma.

This is why often when you bomb on a really big fish, a smaller one or two stick around and stay interested. I once hooked three marlin with the same bait! A huge fish first ate the skipjack. Thank goodness that one spat the hook. Then a smaller male came in and ate the same skippie. That hook never went in either. Then another fish came along and ate the bait properly for a good release.

Another time, I had a boatload of a Zim family. Next thing the skipjack we were chasing were all compressed together and started being lifted out of the water as they cruised along the surface at full speed. They were being coraled by a posse of marlin. I put that boat on the plane and chased that shoal which was half airborne half the time. As I got to the shoal it sounded and I cut the motors. The shoal stayed right there because the marlin were all ready and waiting down below. As the bubbles cleared, the most amazing scene unfolded for us. The marlin were just picking off the skipjack like jelly tots. Then the big momma came up and swam right under us. I grabbed this little kid to the edge (who had just released a sailfish), and we both gawked into the ultra-blue water right into the eye of this huge marlin as it swam and turned for us right under the boat.

They ate the whole shoal!
