Peyronie’s Disease (Induratio Penis Plastica), the curvature of the penis, has been mentioned in literature as early as the 1500s. It is noted in the works of the famous Italian anatomist Gabriel Fallopius a pioneer in reproductive organs and Andreas Vesalius a 16th century Dutch Physician and author of one of the most influential books on Human anatomy De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Septem (On the Fabric of the Human Body).

But it was not until 1743, that a surgeon at the Court of King Louise XV in France, called Francois de la Peyronie, outlined the disease in detail. From then onwards, the condition became commonly known in England as ‘Peyronie’s disease’ or simply ‘Peyronies’.

The first surgery to correct Peyronie’s disease and removal of the fibrous plaque was performed in 1882. Sixty years were too pass before further changes in surgery came along. In 1943 Mr. O.S. Lowsley removed plaque and insertion of new tissue. In 1965 R Nesbitt introduced a tucking technique. This surgery was popular at the time but would reduce penis length by up to 8cm (3 inches).

More recently, popular treatment was either Xiapen injections, Penile Plication which shortens the penis, and Penile Implants. With a Penile Implant, an erection is achieved with a manual pump. For more information please visit Peyronie’s Disease Treatment Options.

Today Focused Shockwave Treatment is considered the gold standard for Peyronie’s Disease treatment by leading practitioners around the world.

The benefits of Focused Shockwave therapy mean that patients do not have to undergo painful invasive surgery under sedation. The Shockwaves break down the fibrous plaque which is secreted naturally through the bodily waste system. The curvature or deformity is corrected and increased sexual function is restored.
