Star Wars ANDOR Trailer & Release Date | Disney Lucasfilm Battle for Nielsen Ratings on Disney Plus | Cassian Andor | Diego Luna | Rogue One | Walt Disney | Streaming Wars

ANDOR dropped a new trailer on Monday August 1st from Disney Lucasfilm ahead of its new Sept 21st release date on Disney Plus ( Disney + ) announcing the the first THREE episodes would debut on that premiere date.

Once again, it looks like Disney is trying to load the box for a potentially second record breaking watch time metric following that of Star Wars - Obi Wan Kenobi back in late May.

With The Walt Disney Company quarterly earnings report around the corner on Wed August 10th 2022, I suspect we will learn the launch date of the Disney Plus Advertising Tier at that meeting. I also suspect it will launch in close proximity to ANDOR if not on the very same day, Sept 21st.

But Disney seems to keep suffering from rapidly declining interest on BOTH TV and Theatrical major IP releases. Marvel films have huge opening weekends and then drop precipitously following the first 4-5 days. The same seems to be happening on Disney Plus with various Marvel and Star Wars series (The Mandolorian being somewhat of an exception). Obi Wan Kenobi had a comparably modest viewership the week of its season finale and then disappeared from Nielsen's Top Ten entirely the following week. Meanwhile other shows that don't benefit from the Marvel or Star Wars brands on alternative streaming platforms seem to linger for a least a few weeks following their massive binge drops.

Disney really needs a solid series from one of these major brands that has great staying power and excellent word-of-mouth to bring in new audiences as they have been getting trounced in like-for-like measurements in their streaming peer groups.

According to SAMBA TV, the season finale of OBI WAN KENOBI featuring the rematch of Kenobi and Darth Vader brought in 1.8M US Households in the first 5 days, while Netflix's THE GREY MAN hauled in a whopping 3.5M over its first FOUR days and STRANGER THINGS Season 4 finale snagged 3.2M households in its first FOUR days (not FIVE days like Kenobi's finale)

Would-be advertisers will be looking to see how strong the brand power still is with Star Wars and Marvel on Disney Plus, and right now it seems they are playing a very distant second fiddle to Netflix's random offering of new IP and otherwise unknown original content.

Let's hope Andor can deliver for Disney, Lucasfilm, and Star Wars this time.
