Canada: Civil liberties group discusses upcoming inquiry on use of Emergencies Act – October 12, 2022
Representatives from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) hold a news conference on Parliament Hill to discuss the upcoming hearings of the Public Order Emergency Commission, which are scheduled to begin on October 13. Speaking with reporters are Cara Zwibel, director of the CCLA's fundamental freedoms program, and Alain Bartleman, special adviser on Indigenous issues. The commission, led by Paul Rouleau, is studying the federal government’s use of the Emergencies Act on February 14, 2022, to declare a public order emergency in response to protests, at a number of Canada–U.S. border crossings and in downtown Ottawa, opposing the government’s COVID-19 public-health measures. On February 17, the CCLA announced it was launching a court challenge of the government's invocation of the Act.
