Organizing Against Demolition/HELP SAVE The Anna Mae Cole Center ft. Alonso and Maya of UFAD

Breaking 10-12-22:The Boston Housing Authority is attempting to push multiple families in elderly/disabled public housing out of their homes on only a single week's notice! These callous and illegal evictions must be fought tooth and nail.

These families at Mildred Hailey Apts are supposedly being "temporarily relocated" while their buildings are torn down and privatized. However @BHA_Boston is not even following their own (terrible) promises about how they would carry it out!

Many of the tenants have only been offered apartments that don’t accommodate their disabilities, or are on the other side of town. When they refuse these absurd offers, they are being threatened with court or questioned about their disabilities.

These decisions about new apartments were supposed to have been made 30 days in advance. But some families haven’t even been shown a replacement apartment yet, and they’re supposed to move out on Friday! Could you pack all your belongings in a week???

Giving 7 days notice of a move-out date seems to be a clear violation of MA’s eviction laws, which require 30 days notice of a clear date. Unfortunately, legal advocacy groups like @BostonLegalAid are working closely with these corrupt agencies and refuse to challenge them.

We demand at minimum that these relocation and demolition plans be IMMEDIATELY HALTED until residents have a satisfactory apartment to move into, and that they be given AT LEAST ONE MONTH TO PACK. But that’s not sufficient on its own.

This utterly sloppy relocation process, which shows no regard for residents’ wellbeing or basic rights, is the norm for these sorts of privatizations. That’s why Human Rights Watch titled their report on the subject “The Tenant Never Wins.”

Ultimately the entire plan to demolish these buildings and replace them with denser ‘mixed-income’ buildings under private ownership and management should be scrapped. Mildred Hailey Apts should be kept as public housing, with all the tenant rights and protections that implies.

It has been a beacon to the surrounding communities for decades, and a beating heart of working class struggle and Black resistance, including as a focal point of the Black Panther Party’s organizing in Boston. The demolition plans will erase that legacy and privatize a vital community resource, further gentrifying the neighborhood. We, the undersigned, resolutely oppose the planned destruction of Boston’s Black history and the gentrification that will ensue. We demand the Anna Mae Cole Center be preserved and designated a historic landmark by the City of Boston."
