GLOOSKAP THE DIVINITY

Of Glooskap’s Birth, and his Brother Malsum the Wolf

Now the great lord Glooskap, who was worshiped in after-days by all the Wabanaki, or children of light, was a twin with a brother. As he was good, this brother, whose name was Malsumsis, or Wolf the younger, was bad.

Before they were born, the babes consulted to consider how they had best enter the world. And Glooskap said, "I will be born as others are."

But the evil Malsumsis thought himself too great to be brought forth in such a manner, and declared that he would burst through his mother's side.

And as they planned it so it came to pass. Glooskap as first came quietly to light, while Malsumsis kept his word, killing his mother.

Have you read about Native American tall tales of Glooskap, Lox, or Master Rabbit? You should because myths and legends like Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, and Pecos Bill attempt to explain how something happened or why something exists. Direct from the source, Passamaquoddy Legends is told by Native storytellers as documents in the late 19th century.

What is a Passamaquoddy? Passamaquoddy is a Maine Indian Tribe from the anglicized Wabanaki peskotomuhkatiyik meaning "people who spear pollock". Like most preliterate cultures, the Passamaquoddy maintained their rich cultural heritage via oral traditions and expressions including songs, poems, prayers, and dances.

A true American Legend. The culture of the first inhabitants of Downeast Maine and Maritime Provinces deserve equal status to both American and Canadian Eurocentric Folklore. Glooskap, Lox, Master Rabbit, and the others are American stories and should be proudly included in the tapestry of North American Folklore.

If you love America and American Legends, you will love this book.
