Watch: Rescue workers retrieved second body in Mitchells Plain

To be attributed to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Fire Service Divers have retrieved the body of a second person who became trapped underground in Mitchells Plain yesterday. The City’s Fire and Rescue crews were back on the scene before 05:00 today, Wednesday October 12, to resume operations, and the man’s body was retrieved just after 6am. He was declared deceased by medics at 06:20. The incident unfolded around 10:00 yesterday, when emergency services responded to a report that someone had fallen into a manhole in Rocklands, and that a second person had also become stuck. Fire crews from Mitchells Plain and Goodwood were dispatched along with a technical rescue vehicle with the equipment needed for such an operation. Metro EMS staff, including a Paramedic, were also on scene. By the time they arrived, someone had already been extricated and taken to hospital, and just after 11.30am, a firefighter and an EMS medic entered the manhole. The body of one of the victims was found at 12:15pm. During yesterday’s operations, one firefighter was taken to hospital due to possible contamination with the sewage water.
