In 1898 a black woman named #CallieHouse helped start a movement to make the United States government pay #reparations to black people who were formerly slaves. The movement was called National Ex-Slave Mutual Relief, Bounty and Pension Association and it was spreading throughout the US. No prominent black leaders backed House and when she was jailed for mail fraud in 1916, no black leadership fought to set her free nor did they pick up the reparations fight. Why? And how would blacks justify receiving reparations today, 160 years after freedom?
