Pelecanus Linnaeus, 1758 is a genus of waterfowl, the only living genus in the family Pelecanidae.
The genus includes 8 species, all of them large, living on large lakes or near marine coasts.
Their characteristic feature is the deep throat sac under the long, broad beak. They have no sexual dimorphism.
Pelicans have short, strong legs and webbed feet that make them move swiftly through the water and facilitate their rather clumsy takeoff from the liquid surface.
