The Soviet Army used political officers during the initial formation of the Soviet Union to keep an eye on Tzarist officers of questionable loyalty. They were also used for political education of the men in Marxist-Leninist principles and organizing welfare and recreation events.

Today, the political officer is used to educate Russian soldiers in their duties to the state, as well as coordinate Religious and education services.
