Italian civil safety authorities have issued a stage orange warning after the volcano on the island of Stromboli erupted on Sunday, sending lava cascading into the sea.

The alert was raised from yellow to orange as a result of “enhanced imbalance” of the volcano, with individuals on the tiny island close to Sicily suggested to remain indoors and steer clear of home windows and glass doorways.

In order not to inhale harmful fumes, local residents were advised not to go outside. So far, there is no talk of evacuation, but people have been asked to be prepared for anything.

Stromboli is famous for the fact that its activity has not stopped for several millennia. Small explosions occur all the time in its crater, but lava pours out quite rarely on such a scale. The last time this happened was 13 years ago.
